Medical Massage Therapy

While stress alleviation is commonly a benefit of massage, a medical massage is focused on healing a diagnosed condition and is results-orientated. Conditions can range from auto/sport injuries to sciatica to fibromyalgia.

This drug-free treatment option is prescribed by a physician and can help patients who are suffering from either acute or chronic conditions. The physician directs the physical therapist as to which areas of the body need to be treated. Medical massage simply entails the specific massage performed by a certified massage therapist, (CMT), to treat a medical condition. Common symptoms can include sore or tight muscles, nerve compression or entrapment, spasms, pain, and inflammation.

Medical massage is one component of the overall treatment plan for a patient. The massage seeks to reduce the patient’s inflammation and pain, as well as decrease muscle spasm and dysfunction. Depending on the condition, the massage therapist may utilize various procedures or modalities. These techniques can include deep tissue, myofascial release, active release therapy (ART), trigger point therapy, or positional release.

Additional benefits include helping restore muscle strength and suppleness, improve circulation, boost the immune system, and increase the patient’s range of motion and flexibility. The patient may also experience posture and coordination improvement, which can help prevent future pain.
